SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Civil Rights leaders Bishop Cornelius Bowser has endorsed John Hemmerling for San Diego County Sheriff.
Bishop Cornelius Bowser stated: “I am pleased to offer my support and endorsement to John Hemmerling for Sheriff. Mr. Hemmerling has dedicated his life to public service as a Marine Colonel, San Diego Police Officer, and head prosecutor for the city of San Diego. He has proven to be trustworthy and loyal. Mr. Hemmerling has the capacity, determination, and management skills to improve the Sheriff’s detention facilities, bring community and law enforcement together to focus on changing the conditions that promote racial bias, and create innovative solutions to reduce gun violence and crime. Vote for John Hemmerling on November 8th.”
Bishop Cornelius Bowser was exposed to gangs and drugs at an early age as a former-member of the West Coast Crips, the first and most violent gang in San Diego County. In the 1980’s, he turned his life over to Christ and accepted the call to the ministry. He has devoted his life to changing the lives of young people caught up in the culture of the streets. Bishop Bowser is the founding pastor of Charity Apostolic Church. He served as a commissioner on the San Diego Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention (2012-2017). He is a founding member of the Community Assistance Support Team (C.A.S.T.) which supports homicide victims’ families and has helped reduce gang violence in San Diego. He is also Director of the No Shots Fired program a violence interdiction program with a focus on primary gun violence prevention, core intervention, tertiary deterrence, and hospital-based violence intervention and injury reduction.
John Hemmerling responded, “I am honored to be endorsed by Bishop Cornelius Bowser, who has done so much to help victims’ families and reduce gang violence in our communities. I look forward to working closely with Bishop Bowser and other community leaders to restore the public’s trust. I will do my utmost to fight crime, reduce gun violence, stop the flood of illegal drugs, and end the senseless deaths in our jails when I am elected sheriff.”
